Unmasked Encore Performances

Image
There have been many trends that have been a part of The Masked Singer from season to season. These include the contestants walking onto the stage while a song is playing, each group having theme nights, with Group A having the premiere as a regular episode, wildcard contestants in each group, and the unmasked contestant performing an encore of the song they had just performed that episode or any song they performed that season. Over time, some of these trends have changed, as Seasons 7, 8, and 9 did not have any wildcard contestants, and neither will Season 12, and the walk-in song for contestants on theme nights is now a song that relates to the theme of the episode and not the costume itself. However, there is one trend that has evolved in a fascinating way and will also be the focus of my blog post for today, unmasked encore performances. On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, during the premiere of its Eighth Season, actor and comedian Eric Idle from Monty Python was unmasked. At this ...

Season 11 Finale

Image
After eleven amazing episodes, we had finally reached the season finale of Season 11 of The Masked Singer! As I had enjoyed all the other episodes this season, I was sure that the finale was going to be amazing as well. As there were only two contestants left at this point, I knew that how it was going to work would be that both contestants would get two songs to perform, and I was excited to see how they were both going to wrap up their time on the show.  The episode started off in one of the most unique ways imaginable, as it started with Goldfish and Gumball descending to the stage from the ceiling on suspended platforms. From there, it was time for the first performance of the night, which was Gumball. In place of a clue package, he talked about what his time on the show has meant to him. He said that the experience had been unreal, and that it was wonderful to show what he is capable of musically. He then said that in his life, he has had to fight in order to be seen, and that...

The Semifinals

Image
After an amazing Quarterfinals last week, it was time for The Semifinals! As we had three amazing contestants still in the competition, my expectations were high for the episode. This episode was also two hours long, as the first hour was The Road to the Semifinals. While these types of episodes are typically uneventful and can easily be skipped without missing anything, I always watch them because I like to see every episode, it’s nice getting a reminder of everything that has happened in the season so far, and there was also going to be some additional performances and clues, and I knew that I wanted to see them. The additional performances were all great, even though they were interspliced with audio of the panelists complimenting them throughout the season. For Goldfish’s additional performance, she sang “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green, during which she showed off the beautiful tone she has in her voice. For Gumball’s additional performance, he sang “Go the Distance” by Michael B...

The Quarterfinals

Image
After three amazing rounds each with Group A, Group B, and Group C, it was time for The Quarterfinals! As these were the top four contestants of the season and they had all been amazing in their respective groups, I knew we were in for a great episode. At the start of the episode, Nick told the panelists that they were about to get some extra help and pointed out a blue button on the desk. He said that they could hit it when they were really stumped as to a contestant’s identity, and that when they hit it, it would trigger an immediate package delivery from Prime, which explained the commercials for Prime that aired during the show that featured contestants several times this season. Nick then said that inside the package would be an item that was an extra clue to the identity of the contestant that they chose to use it on, before saying that they had to use it wisely, saying that it could only be used once per show. From there we went to the first performer of the show, which was The ...

Soundtrack Of My Life Night

Image
After an amazing return to Group B with Girl Group Night, it was time for the Group B Finals with Soundtrack of My Life Night! This was a theme where the contestants performed songs that hold a special place in their hearts, and it was also a theme night last season that gave us three amazing performances, and with three more amazing contestants this time around, I was looking forward to this episode. The episode started the same way as the other group finals this season, with a group performance among the three contestants, and they performed “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi. I always enjoy these group performances, as it lets each contestant show off their vocal abilities together. After that, it was time for the first performer of the night, which was The Beets. In their clue package, they said that they chose to perform a powerful song about a single moment in your life that shows you what you’re capable of, and for them, that moment was when they each became fathers. One Beet said that ...

Girl Group Night

Image
After three great episodes with Group C and three great episodes with Group A, it was time to return to Group B. I was looking forward to this, as not only had it been over a month since we last saw them, but there were also three amazing singers in the group that we were going to hear again. With the theme being Girl Group Night, I was interested to see what songs they would perform, and with the final wildcard contestant of the season joining in this episode, I had high expectations for this episode. The episode began in an entertaining way, as it started with the panelists performing “Wannabe” by Spice Girls. From there, we went to the first performer of the night, who was Miss Cleocatra. In her clue package, she said that she had a gang of great women that shaped her, starting with her own mother, who was a maid, so she didn’t have to be. She then said that the best gift she ever got from her mother was her work ethic, as it made her the hardest hustler in Tinseltown, and now all t...

Queen Night

Image
After an amazing return to Group A with Transformers Night last week, I had high expectations for the Group A Finals this week, especially considering the theme of the episode was Queen Night. I have enjoyed all the other episodes that were centered around a specific artist, such as Andrew Lloyd Webber, ABBA, Elton John, and Billy Joel, so I was sure this one would be just as good, as Queen is one of my favorite bands. This along with the fact that I knew we had three amazing singers had me looking forward to the episode. The episode started off with a group performance between all three contestants singing “We Are the Champions,” which I enjoyed as it gave all three contestants a chance to stand out. After this performance, it was time for the first contestant of the night, which was Ugly Sweater. In his clue package, he talked about how he has inspired a variety of artists, from Snoop Dogg to Nirvana, and he even got to work with Tupac. Visual clues included a pool float, a praying h...

Transformers Night

Image
After an amazing start to the season with all three groups and three amazing episodes with Group C, it was time to return to Group A for Transformers Night! When I first heard about this theme night, I had no idea what was going to happen. I thought that the contestants would perform songs about cars or robots, or songs by the band The Cars. I was also interested to see how the unmaskings would play out, as there were going to be five performances in the episode, one of which was a wildcard contestant they still had to introduce, and two reveals, so I was curious if they were going to do a cliffhanger ending and have the second unmasking at the beginning of the next episode.  The episode started off with Nick coming to the stage by driving in the Optimus Prime truck, parking it outside the studio, and once he was on the stage, Optimus Prime himself walked out too, and even spoke as well, being voiced by his long-time voice actor Peter Cullen, which I found to be very cool. After th...

Shower Anthems Night

Image
After four amazing episodes so far this season, it was going to be interesting to see how a group final would play out this season, especially one with a theme like “Shower Anthems.” When I first found out this was going to be a theme for an episode, I guessed that it was going to be songs that people sing in the shower, which could be any songs at all, and I thought also sounded generic. I was still looking forward to it though, because it was the last three contestants of Group C, and I knew they all sounded great. The episode started with a group performance of The Clock, The Lizard, and The Poodle Moth singing “Shower” by Becky G. I enjoy these group performances, as it gives each of the contestants that episode a chance to stand out together. After that, Nick said that each of the contestants would be performing a song that they like to sing in the shower, which explained the song choices with regards to the theme. He then said that there would be a double unmasking on this episod...

TV Theme Night

Image
With three amazing episodes to start off the season, it was going to be interesting to see how they continued with each group, especially since we were going to be sticking with Group C who we had just met, rather than going back to Group A. It was also interesting to see that they brought back a theme night from a previous season, which was TV Theme Night, which I was surprised by, as while I enjoyed it the first time when they had it in Season 8, I didn’t think it was the best episode that season, so I was curious to see how they would pull it off this time. The episode began in one of the best ways that it could, as it opened with all four panelists performing the theme song to “Gilligan’s Island,” and they were all on a prop of a boat and dressed as characters from the show. Ken was dressed as Gilligan, Robin was dressed as The Skipper, Jenny was dressed as Ginger, Rita was dressed as Mary Ann, and Nick was dressed as The Millionaire. From there, we went to the first performer of t...

Billy Joel Night

Image
After two amazing episodes to start the season, it was time for us to meet Group C in Billy Joel Night! I was hoping that the contestants in this group would be as great as the ones in Group A and Group B, and that we would be in for another amazing episode. By the time the episode ended, I knew that all three groups still had amazing singers in them, and that no matter who the three wildcard contestants were, they would not take away from who we have already met. The episode started off with Robin doing a rendition of “My Life,” which I felt was a good way to start the show. The first performer of the night was The Poodle Moth. In her clue package, she said that she was drawn to the flame for her entire life, but she always felt like the bright lights were never meant for her, saying that she thought she wasn’t funny enough or pretty enough. So, she took a step back and helped others achieve their dreams, and while she loved that, she wanted to spread her own wings, but if she could j...
