Shower Anthems Night

After four amazing episodes so far this season, it was going to be interesting to see how a group final would play out this season, especially one with a theme like “Shower Anthems.” When I first found out this was going to be a theme for an episode, I guessed that it was going to be songs that people sing in the shower, which could be any songs at all, and I thought also sounded generic. I was still looking forward to it though, because it was the last three contestants of Group C, and I knew they all sounded great.

The episode started with a group performance of The Clock, The Lizard, and The Poodle Moth singing “Shower” by Becky G. I enjoy these group performances, as it gives each of the contestants that episode a chance to stand out together. After that, Nick said that each of the contestants would be performing a song that they like to sing in the shower, which explained the song choices with regards to the theme. He then said that there would be a double unmasking on this episode, unless one of the panelists chose to ring the Ding Dong Keep it on Bell.

The first performer of the night was The Clock. In her clue package, she talked about how being in the shower gives her the courage to belt out the biggest diva hits of all time. She then said that one time, she was nominated for one of the most prestigious awards against Aretha Franklin and Natalie Cole, but she didn’t think she would win, so she stayed home and spent the evening literally scrubbing the kitchen floor. And then she ended up winning, and she gave her acceptance speech to the mop instead of an audience of millions. Visual clues were a t-shirt with a heart that said “sweet” on it and an alarm clock that said “wake up.” She then gave an amazing performance of “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, where she showed that she has the right amount of power in her voice to sing the song, and that she is a legend on the same level as Aretha Franklin. After each performance that night, the contestants said who on the show they have a connection to as an additional clue, and Clock said that she was connected to Nick, saying that it wasn’t the first time he hosted her. As I have said several times in these blog posts, I am confident that The Clock is disco singer Thelma Houston. She won the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance when she was up against Aretha Franklin and Natalie Cole for the same award, and she performed on an episode of “America’s Got Talent” while Nick Cannon was hosting.

The second performer of the night was The Lizard. In his clue package, he said that when he is in the shower, he goes full emo and sings the anthem of troubled teens everywhere. He then said that before he could drive, he was living two lives, getting straight A’s in school, and outside of school, running the streets with the bad crowd. He was messing up so much that he saw the inside of a jail cell more than once, and then realized that he needed to clean up his act. Visual clues included The Dragon costume, a thermometer that was at zero degrees, and a picture of Justin Timberlake. He then performed a song that I never would have expected him to sing, which was “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescense. I was impressed by how well he did at singing a song that is by a female singer with a powerful voice and features aggressive backing vocals. He did a great job at showing off the power in his voice. After the performance, the panelist he said he had a connection with was Rita, as they have both won the same out-of-this-world award. Rita and Robin then both doubled down on their guess of Sisqo, and I agreed with them after all the previous clues.

The final performer of the night was The Poodle Moth. In her clue package, she said that music has always been her therapy, as while some people sing pop hits in the shower for fun, she uses it as a time of total emotional release. She then talked about when her family sold her childhood home, which she said was filled with tumultuous memories, and that there was so much sadness within the walls that she dreamed of leaving it, but when it came time to leave, she couldn’t help but feel that a part of her was gone. Visual clues included the number 3 on a for sale sign, a book called “An Extraordinary Moth,” and house plants. She then gave a beautiful performance of “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert. After her performance, she said that the panelist she was connected to was Robin, and she said that working with his dad Alan Thicke is part of one of the biggest moments of her career and her life. I still agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that The Poodle Moth is Chrissy Metz. The 3 on the sign is because she had two siblings on “This Is Us,” and they were known collectively as “the big three,” and Alan Thicke also guest starred on an episode of “This Is Us,” which is how she worked with him.

After that, it was time for the first unmasking of the night, and the singer with the least amount of votes was revealed to be The Lizard, and while I thought that he was a great singer, I was not surprised that he was going to get unmasked. Once he was unmasked, he was revealed to be Sisqo, which was the first time this season that any of the panelists had a final guess that was correct. I was also excited to see Sisqo on the show because I had written about why he would be perfect for the show two months ago, and I also said that it would be great to hear him sing “Thong Song” after he got unmasked, which is exactly what happened. While he was performing “Thong Song,” he also showed off some amazing dance moves, even doing a single-handed cartwheel while still in the costume.

Then, it was time for the battle royale between Clock and Poodle Moth which would decide which of them would go to the quarterfinals. They then did their own renditions of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Both performances were amazing, as both singers showed off the power in their voices, and I knew that this would be one of the closest battle royales in the show so far. In the end, The Clock ended up winning and going to the quarterfinals, which didn’t surprise me because she did amazing with both of her performances. However, I thought Poodle Moth was amazing as well, and was hoping that they would use the bell to save her from being unmasked. Right when she was about to get unmasked, the audience stopped chanting “take it off” and started chanting “ring the bell,” which is what Rita then did. I am glad that Rita saved her from being unmasked because truthfully, nobody deserved to be unmasked in this episode, and now we get to hear more amazing performances from Poodle Moth.

Overall, this was another amazing episode, and I will see you all next week when we go back to Group A for Transformers Night!
