The Season 14 Semifinals
After ten weeks of an amazing Season 14, it was finally time for The Semifinals! I was greatly looking forward to this for the simple reason that it was the second to last episode with the final five contestants who were all amazing singers, which meant that we would be getting five amazing performances.
There was no group performance at the beginning of the episode, as we instead jumped into the first performer, which was Galaxy Girl. In the place of traditional clue packages, the vault was opened and each of the contestants’ case files were brought out. For Galaxy Girl, she showed a necklace of a heart that was broken, and one half said “Best,” and the other half said “Friends.” She then said that she has looked up to one star her whole life, and that by day they would sing karaoke in her convertible, but by night she took the world’s biggest stages by storm. She then said that she watched in awe, saw the awards, the glitz, the glam, and also the public scrutiny and headlines, and she remembers how much her heart would break for her. She then said that when it was her turn in the spotlight, she was scared to follow in her footsteps, but she prepared her for what was to come, and she has always been her guiding light.
She then went on to give an amazing performance of Misery Business by Paramore, during which she showed off all the power and energy in her voice.
After every performance, the contestants shared which of the panelists they had a connection with, and from there, that panelist had 25 seconds to ask them any questions. The panelist Galaxy Girl had a connection with was actually host Nick Cannon, and during his questioning of her, it was revealed that Nick is better friends with her husband than with her, and she has known Nick since the early 2000s.
Rita and Jenny correctly guessed that she was Ashlee Simpson.
The next performer of the night was Pangolin. I am not going to get into her clues for reasons that I think should make sense to all of you reading.
She then went on to give an amazing performance of It Must Have Been Love by Roxette, during which she showed off all the power and emotion in her voice. The performance also started off in a way that was… interesting to say the least, as it started off as a breakup scene from a Spanish soap opera.
After her performance, she said that she had a connection with Ken, as they had been on a show together. One of the panelists, in this case Jenny, finally guessed correctly at this time that Pangolin was Rachel Platten.
The next performer of the night was Crane. The bird, by the way, not the construction vehicle. In her clue package, she pulled out a file showing her brain and heart. She then said that when she had her breakout success, multi-platinum more specifically, there was so much pressure to strike while the iron was hot, but behind closed doors, her world was falling apart, as both of her parents were sick and she had to be there for them. She then said that when she would share her work with them, she could see joy, and she didn’t realize it, but she was inspiring them to fight, and seeing their light pushed her to keep fighting too, so they leaned on each other, and after several difficult years, they can finally take a deep breath.
She then went on to give an amazing performance of Break Free by Ariana Grande, during which she showed off all the power in her voice, hit some impressive high notes, and showed off some impressive dance moves.
After the performance, she revealed that she had a connection with Rita, saying that they were on TV together, and were competing against each other. Even though Rita threw out several names at this time, she did manage to guess correctly that Crane was Normani, as they did compete against each other on an episode of the game show That’s My Jam.
The next performer of the night was Pugcasso. In his clue package, he pulled a VHS audition tape that was dated 2012 out of his case. In fact, his entire clue package was presented like an audition tape. He then said that there was a moment when everyone in America had their eyes on him, and suddenly, he was thrown into interviews and photoshoots, but the problem in his mind was that he always thought of himself as a musician and not a celebrity. He then said that he works really hard to keep his life as normal as possible for him and his family, and his own kid doesn’t know he’s famous.
He then went on to give an amazing performance of Bad Dreams by Teddy Swims, during which he showed off all the power, energy, and emotion in his voice.
The panelist that he was revealed to have a connection with was Jenny, as they had shared a stage together before, presumably on a talk show. None of the panelists were able to correctly guess that he was Phillip Phillips, so it’s going to be interesting to see if they ever figure it out, considering the clue package on this episode was basically an audition for American Idol.
The final performer of the night was Cat Witch. I will not be getting into clues much for reasons that you probably remember, but I will say that it consisted of her reading a letter that she wrote to her “mom,” even though she was really referring to Rita.
She then went on to give an amazing performance of Run To You by Whitney Houston, during which she showed off all the power and emotion in her voice, more than she had in any other performance up to this point.
The panelist that she revealed she had a connection with was Robin, as she said that not only has he worked with her family members, he also welcomed her family into his home. While Robin was asking his questions, he asked questions that told him how old she was, which proved to be very helpful, as one of her parents has recorded with him, she knew what “6 7” was, she didn’t know who Neil Diamond was, and then he asked her if there was anyone else on the panel she had a connection to, to which she responded with Rita.
It was at this point that Rita finally figured out that Cat Witch was her daughter in the Descendants franchise, Kylie Cantrall.
After that, it was time for the unmasking, but Nick instead revealed it by announcing the four singers in the finale in order of who got the most votes, and the singer who did not make it into the finale was Pangolin.
Before she could be unmasked, her Crack The Case Clue Case was opened, and inside was revealed to be a pair of boxing gloves, and if you remember who I said Pangolin was, you know what this is referring to.
Pangolin then unmasked, and the internet and Jenny McCarthy were proven to be right yet again, as she was revealed to be Rachel Platten. I am so glad she was on the show, because she is in my opinion, such an amazing singer and very underrated. For her unmasked encore performance, she performed Fight Song, as you would expect, which was also the first performance of Calla Lily earlier in the season, making it the first time a song is performed two times in one season by two different contestants.
Overall, this was another great episode of Season 14 of The Masked Singer, and I’ll see you all next week with The Finale!
