My Thoughts On Season 14

Hello everybody!

In my latest blog post, I told you all that I was going to share with you my thoughts on Season 14 of The Masked Singer, and here they are!

It was amazing and I loved it!
Well, I hope you all enjoyed reading this, and I’ll see you all soon!

I’m just joking! I’m going to go a little more in depth on what I thought about this season!

As always, the season gave me more of what I love from the show: celebrities who are dressed in crazy costumes and are just putting their whole hearts into giving amazing performances. Seriously, these are celebrities that have nothing to prove, and could just as easily phone it in with their performances, but they aren’t.

Before I keep going with all the positives for the season, there is something I really need to address. It’s the Theme Nights. I understand that Theme Nights have been a part of the show ever since Season 8, and even the Theme Nights this season were great, but there were some very bizarre choices for themes to center entire episodes on. I mean, I will not deny that Twilight has had a significant impact on pop culture, but making an entire episode centered around it in 2026? I don’t know, but it seems like a weird choice at this point in time. But certainly the most bizarre choice for a Theme Night this season was Care Bears Night. I don’t know why anyone would even be thinking about The Care Bears in the year 2026, in fact, I don’t think anyone even remembers them anymore. Also, why did they even choose a Care Bears Night? The franchise wasn’t celebrating any major milestone anniversaries this year, unlike many of the other franchises they dedicate entire Theme Nights to, so how did the people working on the show even think of it? And I’m not the only person to be perplexed by this. As I will let you know later on, one of the contestants also found it bizarre.

But that’s not the only thing with the Theme Nights. In the past seasons, the songs that were performed also related to the theme of that episode. This season, the songs performed were completely random, with no connection to the theme whatsoever, probably because the themes were so oddly specific that they don’t have any songs that immediately connect to them. So, as a result, it feels like the Theme Nights are just there for creative set dressing for that episode.

I know that everything I just said made it seem like I have a problem with this season, but I really don’t. I have still enjoyed every single episode, and almost all the performances have been enjoyable.

In fact, I am now going to go over my thoughts on every contestant this season, and make sure that I leave absolutely no details out.

The first contestant that was unmasked was Googly Eyes. For those of you who are wondering what a costume with that name could look like, which I imagine is every single one of you reading, here’s what it looked like. It was a weird monster-like creature with a bunch of eyes coming out of the top, and it also didn’t have any legs, instead being powered by a motor with wheels, and it was also the biggest costume on the show ever. The celebrity that was revealed to be inside the costume was former baseball player David Ortiz, who is also known by the nickname Big Papi. For those of you who are wondering whether or not he was a good singer, I would like to add that I am writing about the contestants in the order in which they were unmasked, so he was the first unmasking of the season. I’m not sure that I can call what he gave a performance, nor can I realistically call it a song, as what he chose to perform was Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon, which for those of you who don’t know, pretty much just consists of the title being shouted over and over again, and not in a musical way. And in a weird way, I kind of liked it. It was not a serious performance whatsoever, and you could tell that David Ortiz knew that he was not a good singer, and decided to just have fun with it. Also, here’s a crazy fact that was displayed on the screen during The Finale: David Ortiz was cast just three days before the season started taping. Much like I have always wondered the other times this has happened, I’m genuinely curious as to who was supposed to be in this costume.

The next contestant that was unmasked was The Croissants. I am not sure how I feel about them. What I mean is that they were not the worst singers the show has ever had, but they were also revealed to be Todd & Julie Chrisley. Yeah, those of you who are familiar with their story know exactly what I am talking about. I would also like to let you all know that the show could not have leaned into the fact that they had been to prison any more, as they had a ball and chain on their legs like a prison chain gang, they were wearing pants that had black and white stripes like old time prisoners, and they performed Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley. And yet, I can’t say that they were the worst performers this season, as they were actually okay. Also, according to Todd & Julie Chrisley themselves, if they had made it to the next round, they would have performed Butter by BTS. Get it? Because they were Croissants, you see?

The next contestant that was unmasked was Le Who Who, which is a parody of the popular Labubu dolls. Yes, they actually named the costume that. She was also revealed to be actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish, and despite the fact that she is not a singer, I have to say that she is easily one of the most entertaining contestants the show has ever had. One Way Or Another by Blondie was surprisingly perfect for her voice, and she was just incredibly crazy, from flashing everybody by lifting up the dress on the costume constantly, and telling Nick that she was ready to be his next baby mama. Also, here’s a fun fact that was displayed on the screen during The Finale: the costume that Tiffany Haddish was supposed to wear was a Triceratops. Maybe this will become a costume in Season 15?

The next contestant that was unmasked was Handyman. Every time I see this costume, I can’t look at it without thinking that it looks like a robotic Bob The Builder. He was also revealed to be 80s and 90s rapper and actor Tone Loc, who has one of the raspiest voices I have ever heard on a human being. He also falls under an oddly specific category that Grandmaster Flash and Flavor Flav also fall under, which is that they are old school hip hop legends that are just there to have fun and not be serious contestants. What I mean is that his first performance was Shake Your Groove Thing by Peaches & Herb, which is a very cheesy song, and the backing vocals did so much work that his voice was almost drowned out. His second performance was easily one of the funniest of the season, as he performed Can I Kick It by A Tribe Called Quest, where almost all he sang during the entire performance was the title of the song over and over again. Also, and I am only saying this because I never noticed it until I literally read about it on the internet: apparently the gear on his hard hat turned. Yes, I know. Life changing information.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Scarab. I am just going to say this right now, it takes a lot to surprise me, and it has been very rare that this show has actually been able to surprise me. But when Nick Cannon announced that she was going to get unmasked, I could not have been more surprised, as she was such an amazing singer. She gave amazing performances of Set Fire To The Rain by Adele and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper, the latter of which was a more slowed down version that was still an excellent take on the song. She was also revealed to be actress Taraji P Henson, who is also the most decorated contestant in the history of the show. Additional fun fact, a few weeks after she got unmasked, she was a guest panelist on Spice Girls Night, making her the first celebrity to be a contestant and a guest panelist in the same season.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Queen Corgi. She was revealed to be podcast host Claudia Oshry, who is an interesting case, as she does not have a Wikipedia page, but when I have told my friends that she was a contestant on the season, almost every single one of them already knew who she was. I am just going to say this right now, she was a really great singer, giving great performances of Don’t Rain On My Parade by Barbra Streisand and Unstoppable by Sia. She was also one of the few contestants to quit the competition, and she later admitted that her reason for doing so was due to having given birth a few months prior and dealing with postpartum depression and just constantly pumping nonstop when she was in her trailer.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Calla Lily, who was revealed to be Teddi Mellencamp from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and despite not being a professional singer, did very well on the show with her performance of Fight Song by Rachel Platten and Jack & Diane by her father John Mellencamp.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Owl. He was an interesting contestant to say the least. While he was revealed to be a professional singer, his singing voice is GONE, and he gave some truly bizarre performances of Wild Thing by The Troggs, Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers, and White Wedding by Billy Idol. His performance of Ain’t No Sunshine sounded more like a dirge, and me and my parents have all come up with who he sounded like, as my dad said he sounded like folk singer Leo Kotke, my mom said he sounded like comedian Steven Wright, and I said that he sounded like Eeyore or Optimus Prime. So this is all just me prefacing that Owl was revealed to be Billy Ray Cyrus. Yes, a professional singer whose kids are also professional singers, one of which is also one of the best singers of our generation, and his voice sounded like that. At the time that the show was airing, I said that they could not have picked a worse time for him to be on the show, as it was when his singing voice was gone, and everyone, including his own family, seemed to hate him. I still stand by what I said, but now I’m also going to say that if he wasn’t on this season, there’s a good chance that they wouldn’t have gotten him for any future seasons, as he is experiencing another brief resurgence following the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, and he has been on more than one Daytime TV Talk Show in the past few days. And when he gave his unmasked encore performance of Achy Breaky Heart, he turned into Billy Vanilli. Those of you who understand that reference know what I’m talking about, but for those of you who don’t understand it, Milli Vanilli was a popular 80s band that was discovered to have spent their entire career lip syncing rather than actually singing, and that’s what Billy Ray Cyrus was doing during his unmasked performance, because the difference between that and every one of his performances on the show was very noticeable.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Snow Cone, who was revealed to be reality star and singer Heidi Montag. Here’s an interesting fact about her: She almost dropped out of the competition due to vocal strain. I am so glad she didn’t because she is such a great singer.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Eggplant. Okay, it’s time for a crazy journey. The Eggplant costume itself looks like Grimace from McDonald’s, and it was used in a promotional poster for the season that read “Big Mask Energy.” Yes, you read that correctly. An Eggplant costume was used for a “Big Mask Energy” joke. At this point, I was fairly confident that he was going to be a joke contestant, but then I saw through several trailers that he had three performances, so at this point I was wondering what kind of person is willing to dress up as an Eggplant, is okay with being the face of that joke, and is good enough to have three performances. Well, now I have my answer, which is that Eggplant was actor and singer Jack Wagner. He was absolutely an amazing singer, and he gave several amazing performances during his time on the show, even his performance of One Step Closer by Linkin Park was great, even though it wasn’t in his Q Zone. A million points to anyone who actually understands that reference. Also, if he had made it to Care Bears Night, he was going to perform Come Fly With Me by Frank Sinatra, which I think would have been another great performance.

The next contestant that was unmasked was High Voltage. For those of you who are wondering what a costume like that could look like, I really don’t know how to describe it. It looked like it was made up of several different electrical outlets, with two plugs serving as the hands, and the head was a lightbulb that looked like a soccer ball. He was revealed to be Alexi Lalas, who is a former soccer player turned sports broadcaster who has also released a lot of music. He is yet another example of a celebrity that is not known for a singer that is a really great singer, and he also sounded like he was younger than 55 years old, as I feel that his performance of Bad Day sounded almost like Andy Grammer, who is 42 years old.

The next contestant that was unmasked was 14 Karat Carrot. As its name suggests, it was a golden carrot, and it had the number 14 in its name in honor of the fact that it was Season 14. Every time I think that the show has run out of celebrities that are not singers that are surprisingly great at it, they keep proving me wrong, as not only was Alexi Lalas a great singer, so was 14 Karat Carrot, who was revealed to be Judge Greg Mathis. He really did a great job at singing old school Motown songs, so much so to the point that he even sounded like some of the artists from that same time period, and even resulted in the panelists guessing some of those artists.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Stingray, who was revealed to be singer and actor Evan Ross. For those of you who are wondering, the answer is yes, he is the son of Diana Ross, and he is also such an amazing singer. He gave such amazing performances of songs like Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees and Starboy by The Weeknd.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Pangolin, who was revealed to be Rachel Platten, the artist who sings Fight Song. As you can probably guess, she is an amazing singer, and she gave amazing performances of Ironic by Alanis Morissette, Mama I’m Coming Home by Ozzy Osbourne, What A Feeling (Flashdance) by Irene Cara, and It Must Have Been Love by Roxette. Her unmasked encore performance was also unique, as she obviously performed Fight Song, which Teddi Mellencamp also performed earlier in the season, making it the first time that a song was performed twice in one season by two different people.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Crane. Say it with me now, the bird by the way, not the construction vehicle. She was revealed to be Normani from Fifth Harmony, and I am just going to say this right now, she is both an amazing singer and dancer, as she gave so many amazing performances where she showed off both her amazing vocal abilities and dance moves. She also led to another milestone with the unmasked encore, as since Khalid was there as her bestie giving clues, he joined her for the unmasked encore of their song Love Lies, making it the first time a contestant was joined by a special guest for their unmasked performance.

The next contestant that was unmasked was Cat Witch, who was also The Masked Insider for the season, Kylie Cantrall. Part of the excitement of her being on the show was seeing whether or not her costar Rita Ora would ever guess her, and she did by the time we got to the end of the season. Also, she is a really great singer and dancer, who gave so many amazing performances, from emotional and powerful performances like It Will Rain by Bruno Mars and Run To You by Whitney Houston, to more energetic performances with a lot of dancing like Starships by Nicki Minaj and Greedy by Tate McRae.

The runner up of the season was Pugcasso, which as its name suggests, was a pug that looked like a painter. He was also revealed to be American Idol winner Phillip Phillips. I am just going to say this right now: he is such an amazing singer who gave amazing performances of songs like Ordinary by Alex Warren and Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead. He also managed to switch it up in the most unexpected way in The Finale, as after a season of giving emotional and powerful performances, he gave an incredibly upbeat final performance of Sussudio by Phil Collins. Also, here’s a funny story about his time on the show. He acknowledged that Care Bears Night was bizarre, and chose to perform Dreams by The Cranberries in a bluegrass style, thinking that it would definitely get him kicked off, but then the judges said it was their favorite performance. He also gave us another milestone during his Unmasked Encore Performance, as when he was singing his song Home, he was given an acoustic guitar to play during it, making it the first time contestant played an instrument live on stage.

The winner of the season was Galaxy Girl, who was revealed to be singer and actress Ashlee Simpson. For those of you who have been keeping track, I already said that Stingray was Evan Ross, who is also her husband, making this the first time a husband and wife competed on the same season of The Masked Singer, but were not competing together. I am also going to say this right now, and my parents agree with this statement as well, she is such an amazing singer who definitely deserved her win, and her Finale performances of Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo and Try by P!NK were both amazing.

Overall, this was another amazing season of The Masked Singer! As of right now, I don’t know when Season 15 is going to happen, or even if it’s going to happen, so I will be pausing this blog for a while, as there are only so many things I can post about during the offseason. I hope that you have all enjoyed reading what I have to say, and I hope you stay tuned for what I have in store next!
