Star Trek Night
After another great episode last week with Care Bears Night, it was time for the final theme night of the season, Star Trek Night, in honor of the franchise’s 60th anniversary! I was looking forward to this episode for the simple reason that we are getting towards the end of the season, and the chances are that we will be getting great performances from here on out.
The episode did not start with a group performance from the four contestants on the episode, but rather with a parody of the original Star Trek intro, and from there, we got into the first performer of the night, which was Stingray.
Much like last week, in lieu of traditional clue packages, each contestant had one colossal clue to their identities on this episode. For Stingray, he said that he has trekking with the worlds biggest stars his whole life, including someone else in the competition, and then an additional clue that was brought out was Michael Jackson’s glove.
He then went on to give a great performance of Starboy by The Weeknd, which could not have been more perfect for his voice.
After the performance, the panelists made their guesses, and it was at this moment that Robin and Rita both figured out who Stingray was, as they both said at the same time that he was Evan Ross.
The next performer of the night was Cat Witch. For her colossal clues, she said that she comes from a talented family, and one of her family members has worked with Robin, and the additional clue that she shared was the Black Swan and Piglet costumes, who were JoJo and Nick Lachey respectively.
She then went on to give a great performance of Starships by Nicki Minaj, during which she showed off all the energy in her voice, and some very impressive dance moves.
As I have reminded you every time that she has performed, Cat Witch is the Masked Insider for the season, Kylie Cantrall, and as of right now, the big mystery is whether or not Rita is going to be able to correctly guess her costar in Descendants by the time she gets unmasked.
The next performer of the night was 14 Karat Carrot. For his colossal clue, Johnny Gill from New Edition was brought onto the stage, and said that 14 Karat Carrot had been like a brother to him, and that they have riffed together for years, but while singing was his day job, it was not the day job of 14 Karat Carrot, which clearly shocked all four panelists.
He then went on to give a great performance of Shining Star by Earth, Wind, & Fire, and for someone who is not a professional singer, he did a great job with this performance. Also, quick side note here, details for this episode were revealed either last month or in January, and from there, I learned that two of the songs that would be performed were Starships and Starboy, but I didn’t know what the other two were. When I found out that 14 Karat Carrot was going to be on this episode, even before I actually learned it, I was confident that he was going to sing Shining Star based on his previous performances.
After the performance, 14 Karat Carrot said that he was friends with Johnny Gill and all the other members of New Edition, but every time he asked them if he could join the group, they told him to stay in his own court. It was also at this time that the panelists finally noticed the scales of justice on the fanny pack on the costume. At this point, I was expecting the panelists to figure out who it was, but they didn’t, as Rita guessed Craig Robinson using information about the show that she really shouldn’t know, as it happened years before she joined the show, Ken guessed Steve Harvey for some reason, which ended up being the closest at this time, while Robin guessed Katt Williams of all people. At this point, I was thinking that either the panelists were never going to figure out who he was, or that one of them, probably Jenny, was going to correctly guess Judge Greg Mathis at the last minute. Spoiler alert: One of these outcomes is sort of correct.
The final performer of the night was Galaxy Girl. For her colossal clue, Vegas showgirls were brought out.
She then went on to give an amazing performance of Lights by Ellie Goulding, during which she showed off all the power in her voice.
I still agree with the popular guess on the internet that Kelly Osbourne also guessed two weeks ago, which is that Galaxy Girl is Ashlee Simpson, as she has recently had a Vegas residency.
After that, it was time for the first unmasking of the night. Yeah, I just realized that I forgot to mention that this episode was a double unmasking at the start of this blog post. So, yeah. Double unmasking.
The first unmasked contestant was revealed to be 14 Karat Carrot, which did not surprise me. Before the panelists could make their final guesses, his Crack The Case Clue Case was brought out. By the way, the clues inside the cases have become way more blatant this season. I know they’re supposed to be one final clue to tell the panelists who it is, but they are not even trying to be subtle with them, and both clues for the unmasked celebrities tonight really support that.
When the case for 14 Karat Carrot was opened, inside was a gavel, and he said that it was ironic being on that side of a panel of judges, as he is usually the one doing all the judging. Get it? Because he’s a judge. At this point, Rita and Ken both stuck with their terrible guesses of Craig Robinson and Steve Harvey, and as I guessed, one panelist guessed correctly at the last minute, but much to my surprise, it wasn’t Jenny who guessed him. It was Robin. 14 Karat Carrot then unmasked, and the internet and Robin were proven to be right, as he was revealed to be Judge Greg Mathis. I have said this several times already, and I am going to say it again: I am genuinely surprised by how great he is at singing. After he finished his unmasked encore performance, he did a mic drop, and it felt completely earned.
The second unmasking of the night was then revealed to be Stingray, which did not surprise me, but it really upset my mom. Before the panelists could make their final guesses, his Crack The Case Clue Case was brought out, and inside was a note that said “I hereby give my child Stingray my endless love. Signed: Mother Supreme.” See what I mean about the clues inside the cases being way more obvious?
In any case, this clue ended up being so helpful and obvious that for only the third time in the show’s history, the panelists were all unanimous in their guess, and both they and the internet were proven to be right, as Stingray was revealed to be Evan Ross. Also, there are two things that I feel are worth mentioning. First is that the people who unmasked him had a hat on standby to put on him, which I found funny. Second is that he has a very high voice, even when he is just talking.
Overall, this was another great episode of Season 14 of The Masked Singer, and I’ll see you all next week with The Semifinals!
