Spice Girls Night
After another amazing episode two weeks ago with Twilight Night, and no episode last week because the Winter Olympics are more popular than I thought, it was time for the next episode with Spice Girls Night!
I was looking forward to this episode, as the show has already had several theme nights dedicated to specific artists, and the episodes and the performances have been varying degrees of great and entertaining, so I felt that this episode would be no different. I was also looking forward to it when I found out that the contestants who were performing were Crane, Pugcasso, and Snow Cone.
Also, I’m going to be completely honest with you all right now. For the longest time, and it was a very long time, the only Spice Girls song I had ever heard of was Wannabe. I know that this has nothing to do with anything, but it’s just something I felt like sharing.
This episode started off the same way as many other episodes in recent seasons, with a group performance from some of the panelists and the contestants. As I have said many times in the past, I enjoy these group performances, as it lets all the contestants and the panelists stand out together.
Also, there was a guest panelist on this episode, and it was not one of The Spice Girls. It was Taraji P Henson, who was already unmasked as The Scarab earlier in the season, making it the first time that someone was a contestant and later a guest panelist in the same season.
From there, it was time for the first performer of the night, which was Crane. Again, the bird, not the construction vehicle. In her clue package, she said that she was lucky to have Mel B take her under her wing, but she has had an O.G. spice in her corner since before she could even walk, which was her grandma. She then said that she remembered being five and seeing her dressed up as Tina Turner for Halloween, complete with her legs out and strutting like a diva. She then said that it’s where she got it from, adding that her grandma is basically her second mom, as she did everything from sewing her costumes, making her evening gowns for pageants, and being in the front row at every performance, so now she was surprising her by being on her favorite show. Visual clues included a football helmet and a construction hat.
She then went on to give an amazing performance of Say You’ll Be There, during which she showed off all the power in her voice, and some very impressive dance moves.
Also, Taraji P Henson came up with a guess for her almost instantly, and could not keep it in, needing to be reminded several times by the panelists that it wasn’t time to make guesses yet.
After the performance, an additional clue was brought out, which was a train, and Crane then said that not every journey sparkles, but this one was pure gold for her soul.
I still agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Crane is Normani. She has spoken a lot about her relationship with her grandma, she did compete in pageants when she was younger, the football helmet is referring to the fact that she is engaged to football player DK Metcalf, the construction hat is referring to the Fifth Harmony song Work From Home, and the train is referring to the fact that she won a Soul Train Music Award.
And in case you were wondering, Taraji P Henson did not guess correctly, instead guessing that Crane was Keke Palmer.
The next performer of the night was Pugcasso. In his clue package, he said that The Spice Girls were lucky to have each other, and that he could be considered “Jealous Spice,” as there have been many times that he has been on his own and felt very lonely, such as when he was in another country doing the biggest show of his life surrounded by legends. He then said that Bruce Springsteen was to his left, and John Mayer was to his right, and it was his turn to go onstage in front of hundreds of thousands of people, all by himself, but the moment he stepped on stage, the entire stadium went wild and sang along to every word. Visual clues included up and down arrows, a sign that said 132 million, the moon, and a sign that said “Silencio.”
He then went on to give an amazing performance of Too Much, during which he showed off all the power, feeling, and emotion in his voice.
After the performance, an additional clue was brought out, which was a letter that said “Rejected: Series Lead,” and Pugcasso then said some people told him he wasn’t good at music, but they weren’t good at their job either, so it all worked out in the end.
I still agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Pugcasso is Phillip Phillips. He did go on tour with John Mayer in 2013, and one of the stops was the Rock In Rio Festival in Rio De Janeiro, which also explains the sign saying “Silencio,” and Bruce Springsteen also performed there, the moon is referring to his debut album The World From The Side Of The Moon, the 132 Million is referring to the record breaking number of votes that were cast in the Season 11 Finale of American Idol which he won, and he was rejected after auditioning for America’s Got Talent Season 2 before American Idol, as he didn’t make it to the finals and his appearance wasn’t aired on the show.
The third performer of the night was Snow Cone. I’m not going to get into her clue package for reasons that you probably already know, but I will say that her clue package had to do with losing her home, and she was audibly getting emotional in the clue package, which you could even hear through the voice distortion.
She then went on to give a great performance of Wannabe, which was very fun and energetic, but also one of the biggest examples of tonal whiplash I have ever seen. Seriously, she gave the most emotional story possible in her clue package, complete with crying, and then started giving the most upbeat performance of the most upbeat song ever. In fact, I’m now going to tell you all something that makes this even crazier. There is a joke in an episode of Family Guy from 2016 that is literally exactly what I just wrote up. And if you don’t believe me, I’m now going to describe it to you all. It was a cutaway gag that featured Peter Griffin auditioning for The Voice and giving an emotional backstory about his mom no longer being alive and missing her so much, complete with crying, before he immediately jumped into an upbeat performance of Wannabe. Yes. You read that correctly. A gag from Family Guy has officially happened on a singing competition show.
After the performance and an additional clue was brought out, the panelists made their guesses, and Jenny guessed correctly that Snow Cone was Heidi Montag, which did not surprise me, as she is typically the one who will correctly guess the reality stars.
Also at this point, seeing how the male snow cone was on stage for her third performance, I was beginning to think that he actually was her husband Spencer Pratt, and was wondering if they were going to reveal him as well.
After that, it was time for the panelists and audience to vote, and the singer with the most amount of votes was revealed to be Pugcasso, which did not surprise me, as me and my family felt that he was the strongest of the episode, though I will admit that it’s kind of funny that Crane, who is an actual girl group member, was not the winner on the night dedicated to one of the most famous girl groups of all time.
This meant that Crane and Snow Cone would now be competing in the Spice Royale. I assumed that this would work the same way as all the other Battle Royales in the show up to this point, with one contestant singing a song first, and then the other contestant singing the same song afterwards. I quickly found out that I was wrong, as it instead worked like the Smack Royale from Season 12, with the contestants taking turns singing the same song, and also singing at the same time. They song that they performed was Stop, which I feel was a great performance for both of them.
After the Spice Royale, the winner was announced to be Crane, which did not surprise me, and also meant that it was time for Snow Cone to be unmasked. The internet and Jenny were proven to be right yet again, as the male snow cone unmasked her, and she was revealed to be Heidi Montag, and then the male snow cone was revealed to be her husband Spencer Pratt, making this the first time that a married couple was on the show together, but only one was actually competing.
Overall, this was another great episode of Season 14 of The Masked Singer, and I’ll see you all next week with OzzFest Night!
