My Thoughts On Season 14 So Far
Hello everybody!
As some of you are probably aware by my lack of social media activity this week, there was no new episode of The Masked Singer this week, due to The Winter Olympics on NBC, so I can’t do a recap of the next episode right now.
So you’re probably wondering, what am I going to write about if there was new episode this week?
Well, seeing as we are literally at the halfway point with six episodes of a twelve episode season, I have decided that for this week, I am going to share my thoughts on Season 14 so far!
Yes, that’s right. I am going to be discussing my thoughts on almost everything we have seen so far on the show, and what we can still expect from the season.
I feel that the best way to start off with this blog post is by saying what I think of the season so far. In the simplest terms imaginable, I think it has been really great!
I feel that we have already had several great performances so far, and many great celebrities have become part of The Masked Singer Family.
While the theme nights are as fun as they usually are, I will admit that we are currently at a point in time where the theme nights for the most part have less to do with song choice, and more to do with how they decorate the set that day and how the panelists are dressed.
What I mean is that on Fear Night, none of the songs that were performed had anything to do with fear, on Clueless Night, only one song that was performed was actually featured in the original movie, none of the songs on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Night were featured in any of the movies, Red White And Clue Night had some very interesting song choices, as two of them were from Canadian artists, and Twilight Night also featured only one song from the movies.
Also, there have been a lot of repeat performances this season, meaning that we are getting a lot more performances of songs that have already been performed in previous seasons. I will admit that this is something that has been done on the show since Season 5, but it has been extensive this season, as every episode this season so far has had one or more song be performed that was already performed in a previous season.
I know it sounds like I am complaining and have a problem with the season, but I really don’t. All the episodes are still very fun, and the performances are still great, even all the repeat songs.
As I said at the beginning of the blog post, we are halfway through the season, and I also mentioned which theme nights we have seen so far, so now I am going to mention what the remaining episodes are.
The next episode is going to be Spice Girls Night. I think it’s fairly self-explanatory what to expect in terms of what songs will be performed on this night, and also, there is going to be a guest panelist on this episode! Surprisingly, it’s not going to be one of The Spice Girls, but rather actress and former contestant Taraji P Henson. Yeah, what do you think of that? For the first time, the show has somebody who is a contestant and a guest panelist in the same season.
The episode after that one is going to be OzzFest Night, which is going to be a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, so I imagine that we are going to hear some songs by Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath. Also, and I know this from the trailer for the season, Kelly Osbourne is going to be a guest panelist on this episode.
The episode after that one is going to be Care Bears Night. Yes, you read that correctly. They are going to have Care Bears Night. I have no idea what songs could possibly be performed on this night, nor why they even chose to have a theme night centered around Care Bears. Seriously, does anyone even remember who they are anymore? Still very much looking forward to this episode, and it’s always nice to see the show do another theme night centered around characters that have been in the Stamford Balloon Parade.
The episode after that one is going to be Star Trek Night, which is going to be in honor of the franchises 60th anniversary. Due to an article that was published a few weeks ago, I know two songs that will be performed in this episode, which are Starships by Nicki Minaj and Starboy by The Weeknd, and I also know that there will be a double unmasking in this episode.
From there, we will have The Semifinals, and after that, we will have the Two Hour Finale.
But obviously, the most important part of the show is the contestants, and I am now going to give you my thoughts on all eighteen this season, and also share with you who is under the ten costumes still in the competition.
David Ortiz - He was not really a good singer by any means, but Turn Down For What ended up being a perfect song for him because it both has almost no lyrics, and it’s kind of a joke song.
Todd & Julie Chrisley - I can’t say that they were the worst singers the show has ever had, but I will say that they were middle of the road, and everything about their time on the show really leaned into the fact that they have been to prison.
Tiffany Haddish - She is easily among the most entertaining contestants the show has ever had, and the show clearly recognized that, as they uploaded the full, uncut ten minutes of her unmasking to YouTube, which is not something they have ever done for any other contestant, with the exception of Kermit The Frog, whose extended unmasking was still less than half the length of what they uploaded for Tiffany Haddish.
Tone Loc - He is bizarrely the third contestant to fall under the hyper-specific category of hip hop legend who is just there to have fun, following in the footsteps of Grandmaster Flash and Flavor Flav. I feel that his song choices also reflect that, as he performed Shake Your Groove Thing by Peaches & Herb, where it felt like the backing vocals were louder than he was, and he also performed Can I Kick It by A Tribe Called Quest, a song which has several lyrics, but almost his entire performance consisted of him saying the title of the song over and over again. He was still a very entertaining contestant though, and he also has the raspiest voice I have ever heard on a human being.
Taraji P Henson - Her unmasking is easily one of the most shocking moments the show has had in a long time, as she is such an amazing singer, and she could have easily gone much farther.
Claudia Oshry - Her voluntary unmasking was yet another shocking moment, as I feel that she was a great singer that could have lasted a few more episodes, but I definitely understand and respect her reasoning for leaving the competition.
Teddi Mellencamp - She was surprisingly a very good singer, especially with her performance of Fight Song by Rachel Platten, and I really hope that she continues to get better following her cancer battle, especially considering the death of James Van Der Beek.
Billy Ray Cyrus - His singing voice is not the same as it used to be, and that is both a good thing, and a bad thing, as my parents said that he sounded like Leo Kotke and Steven Wright, and in a very unintentionally funny moment, when he performed Achy Breaky Heart for his unmasked encore performance, it could not have been more obvious that he was lip syncing.
Now let’s move on to the remaining ten contestants, all of which are great in some way, who I am confident they are, and my thoughts on them.
Galaxy Girl - I am confident that she is Ashlee Simpson, and believe it or not, this show is my first time ever hearing her sing, and I think she is absolutely great.
Pugcasso - I am confident that he is Phillip Phillips from American Idol, and he really is such an amazing singer.
Snow Cone - I am confident that she is Heidi Montag from The Hills, and she is a really great singer.
Stingray - I am confident that he is actor and singer Evan Ross, who is the son of Diana Ross and husband of Ashlee Simpson, who is another really great singer.
Cat Witch - I don’t need to speculate as to who I think she is, because she is our Masked Insider for the season, Kylie Cantrall, but she is definitely an amazing singer.
High Voltage - I am confident that he is former soccer player turned singer Alexi Lalas, and he has already shown some impressive range for a soccer player in only two performances.
Eggplant - I am confident that he is actor and singer Jack Wagner, who is another really great singer.
Crane (The Bird, Not The Construction Vehicle) - I am confident that she is Normani from Fifth Harmony, and even though she has only had one performance so far, she is definitely great.
14 Karat Carrot - I am confident that he is Judge Greg Mathis, and in a surprising turn of events, he is actually a very good singer.
Pangolin - I am confident that she is Rachel Platten, and she is obviously an amazing singer, and her being on this season is very interesting, because Teddi Mellencamp already performed Fight Song earlier in the season, and when Rachel Platten gets unmasked, I am confident that will be her unmasked encore performance, which will give us the first instance of a song being performed by two different contestants in the same season, not counting Battle Royale performances.
Overall, this season has been really great so far, and with six episodes left and ten great singers left, I am sure it will only continue to get better! I’ll see you all next week when the show returns for Spice Girls Night!
