Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Night
After an amazing episode last week with a surprising ending with Clueless Night, it was time for the exact same thing again with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Night! No, I am not even joking, two episodes in a row this season had unexpected and shocking endings. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
I was obviously looking forward to this episode, as not only were we going to see four great singers again, we were also going to see the second Wildcard Contestant of the season.
The episode started off in the only way that it could have, with the panelists performing the theme song to the original 1980s cartoon, which makes sense to me, as it’s one of the most iconic theme songs of all time. I think. I don’t know, I wasn’t alive at the time it was on.
Much like all the other theme nights centered around pop culture franchises, there were people there in costumes of all the Ninja Turtles, and the panelists and Nick were all dressed up as the characters as well, as Robin was dressed as Raphael, Jenny was dressed as Leonardo, Ken was dressed as Donatello, Rita was dressed as Michelangelo, and Nick was dressed as Master Splinter.
From there, it was time for the first performer of the night, which was Cat Witch. I am not going to get into her clue package or any clues about her for reasons that you probably remember if you have read any of my previous blog posts for this season.
After her clue package was over, she gave an amazing performance of Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, during which she showed off all the power and energy in her voice.
If you’re wondering why I haven’t shared any clues for Cat Witch, it’s because she is the Masked Insider, Kylie Cantrall, so I don’t need to share any clues with you all and my guess as well, because we already know who is underneath the costume.
The second performer of the night was Stingray. In his clue package, he said that when you are swimming with the sharks of Hollywood, it’s easy to get swept away in the current of fame, but he had a secret weapon, an oracle in his home, that he would go to for all the advice, such as relationships and career, and she has also literally changed the world, and she certainly changed his, and then he said that she was his mother. He then said that life moves fast, and we don’t always get the chance to say it, so he took that time to thank his mom for all her advice, for holding his hand, and for making room for him in her bed when he was scared. Visual clues included a statue of an angel, a large pearl with a sign that said “Mother of Pearl,” the word “Fam” carved into the coral, two compasses labeled “South” and “Southwest,” and Stingray is also wearing a wedding band.
He then went on to give an amazing performance of Momma Song by Benson Boone, during which he showed off all the power and emotion in his voice.
After the performance, an additional clue was brought out, which was a plate of sushi, and Stingray then said that owning restaurants is just one part of his empire.
I agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Stingray is Evan Ross. Every family clue has to do with his famous family and his mom Diana Ross, the wedding band is referring to the fact that he is married to Ashlee Simpson and the sushi is referring to him being a part owner of Leona’s Sushi House in Studio City.
The next performer of the night was Galaxy Girl. In her clue package, she said that she knew firsthand that when you spend your life in front of cameras, people try to control your every move, especially as a woman, as they try to tell you what to wear, how to talk, and your whole image. She then said that the night before one of the biggest shoots of her life, she changed her look and didn’t tell anybody, and the next day when they saw what she had done, everyone panicked. She then said they don’t know what’s best for her, only she does, and she was right, as the shoot went global. Visual clues included a poster that said “New York Time,” a surfboard, a “Closed” sign, and a bowl of oranges.
She then went on to give a great performance of Just A Girl by No Doubt, during which she showed off all the power and energy in her voice.
After the performance, an additional clue was brought out, which was a pair of jingle bells, and she then said that the holidays are an important time in her career, as she loves the holidays and the cheer.
I agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Galaxy Girl is Ashlee Simpson. She famously changed her hair from blonde to black, the surfboard is referring to her being nominated for and winning Teen Choice Awards, the bowl of oranges is referring to her performing at the Orange Bowl in 2005, and has been part of the Jingle Ball in the past.
The next performer of the night was Queen Corgi. I will not be getting into her clue package for reasons that you can probably guess right now, but I will say that it was very clear that this person was a podcast host, and they also included two references to toast.
After the clue package, she gave a great performance of Unstoppable by Sia, during which she showed off a surprising amount of power in her voice.
As you probably know or guessed, it was very obvious that Queen Corgi was Claudia Oshry, and it may or may not surprise you that none of the panelists guessed her name.
After that, it was time to meet the next Wildcard Contestant of the season, 14 Karat Carrot. Okay, before I get into everything about him, I am going to let you all know about the THIRD crazy journey I went on with a contestant before meeting them this season. One of the first things of note is that one the costume was a fanny pack with the scales of justice on it, and if you know the show like I do, you know that whenever there is a random detail on a costume, it is a clue to the celebrity underneath the mask.
From there, I figured it could mean anything, as I thought of celebrities who are Libras, and then, with the fact that it looked short from the picture and that trailer footage made it seem like he was a rapper, one of my first guesses was Jermaine Dupri. I also initially thought that the scales could mean weighing in, like a boxer, in which case I would have guessed someone like Roy Jones Jr, who has put out some rap music.
Then, I remembered that in one trailer, it said that there was supposedly a boy band legend as a contestant. At that point in time, 14 Karat Carrot was the only male contestant we hadn’t met yet, so he had to be the boy band legend by default, but I didn’t know how to connect the scales of justice to anyone. After doing some more research, I found two boy band legends it could have been: JC Chasez from NSYNC, who was a judge on America’s Best Dance Crew, or Erik-Michael Estrada from O-Town, who is a Libra and shares his name with popular TV cop actor and real life police officer Erik Estrada.
Then, I decided to pay attention to the accolades that the show gave us, and with the trajectory that we were on at that point in time, we still had a lot of Teen Choice Award nominations unaccounted for, one star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, one Emmy nomination, and one Tony win. With Crane being introduced last week and being a contestant who makes up all the other Teen Choice Award nominations by herself, I figured that 14 Karat Carrot was someone with a star on the Walk Of Fame, and with the rapper vibes I was getting from him in the trailers, I looked up if there were any rappers on the Walk Of Fame, and I quickly found an early guess that I was very confident in with Ice T, as he fit all the accolades the show still had left, he seemed to be the same height as the costume, and he also made sense with the scales of justice due to his starring role in Law & Order SVU.
A few days before the episode premiered, a trailer was released that featured a clip of 14 Karat Carrot hitting a high note, and from there, I was completely thrown off with my early guess of Ice T, as I didn’t think he could hit a note like that, nor could he even sound like that.
So now, at this point, the vibe that I was getting was that it was someone who sounded similar to past contestants like Ne-Yo and Mario, so I kept looking on the internet for singers who sounded similar to them, but I could not find anyone who satisfied the accolades.
So basically, I went from a fairly confident guess to not even being able to come up with a single name that I felt could even be slightly correct.
And let me just say this, knowing who it is now, if you gave me a million guesses for 14 Karat Carrot, I never would have guessed correctly.
In his clue package, he said that being a Wildcard was a little bit out of his comfort zone, because he plays by the rules, but it wasn’t always that way. He then said that he used to be trouble, he ended up hitting rock bottom, and he got locked away with no promise of a golden future. He then said that he was letting his family down, and that was no way to live, so he cleaned up his act, as he guessed that deep down, he was always the good guy. Visual clues included a van that said “Mowtown Landscaping,” graffiti that said “Longest Running,” a prison guard wearing a robe, and his mother’s grave.
He then went on to give a great performance of Hold On, I’m Comin’ by Sam & Dave, which was perfect for his voice.
After the performance, an additional clue was brought out, which was a label that said 24K with five other carrots, and he then said that he made a few bad judgement calls when he was younger, but now he is living the golden life.
After a lot of uncertainty and scrambling to find any guess at all, I agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that 14 Karat Carrot is, and I cannot believe I’m saying this, Judge Greg Mathis.
The scales of justice on the fanny pack are obvious, if you believe it or not, he actually does have a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the “Mowtown Landscaping” van is referring to the fact that he was born in Detroit, the graffiti that said “Longest Running” is referring to the fact that his show was one of the longest running in its field, he got arrested several times as a kid, and even went to jail when he was 17, the prison guard with the robe is another reference to him being a judge, his mother’s grave is referring to the fact that she visited him in jail to let him know that she had colon cancer, and based on that news, a judge gave him early probation, which helped him turn his life around, and the tag saying 24K with five other carrots is referring to the fact that his show ran for 24 seasons and that he is married with four children.
After everyone had performed, it was time for the unmasking, and I could not have predicted how this was going to play out.
Right as Nick was about to announce which contestant had the least amount of votes, Queen Corgi interrupted him to say that she was withdrawing from the competition. To say that I found this shocking would be an understatement, as I truly believe that she was one of the best singers in this episode, and she could have lasted a few more episodes. To make things even more bizarre, the panelists didn’t even have a chance to make final guesses, as they just jumped right into the unmasking.
Queen Corgi was then unmasked, and the internet was proven to be right yet again, as she was revealed to be podcast host Claudia Oshry. Upon reading an interview with her after she was unmasked, I saw that she had given birth four months beforehand, was exclusively breastfeeding, pumping in the trailer, and being four months postpartum had started to take its toll on her, so I think it’s great that she was even able to be on the show in the first place.
Overall, this was another great episode of Season 14 of The Masked Singer, and I’ll see you all next week when we meet the final Wildcard Contestant in Red White And Clue Celebration Of America’s 250th Birthday!
