Times Where I Guessed Contestants Correctly With No Help At All
Hello everyone!
With Season 14 currently in process of being taped, and a scheduled January premiere that can’t get here soon enough, and information that won’t be released for a while, I feel that it’s the perfect time to share another article about The Masked Singer in a way that only I can!
Typically after every contestant’s first performance, I will go to social media and the internet to see what people are saying for guesses, and which ones are coming up the most, which is typically how I am able to come up with guesses for the contestants. However, there have been times where I have correctly guessed who a contestant was without any help from the internet and social media, and sometimes even before we actually meet the contestants.
In today’s blog post, I will be discussing all the times where I was able to correctly figure out who was underneath the mask without any help from the internet, and what it was that led me to these correct guesses.
The first contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was Hydra from Season 7. Yes, you read that correctly. It took me until Season 7 to figure out who was underneath the mask all by myself. Have I ever told you that I am extremely uncultured when it comes to celebrities?
Anyway, back to The Hydra.
As soon as I saw the costume, I knew that there was going to be more than one celebrity in it. I mean, it had three legs and three heads, how could there not be at least two celebrities in it? Well, when I saw their Clue Package, I had no guess who it could have been, but as soon as they started performing, I knew exactly who it was. More specifically, as soon as one of them opened their mouth, I immediately recognized their voice, as they have one of the most distinctive voices I have ever heard on a human being.
So because of this, I immediately knew that Hydra was comedy magicians Penn & Teller. I was shocked that none of the panelists figured it out, as Penn has a super distinctive voice.
The next contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was Baby Mammoth from Season 7. In this case, I heard the performance, and while I was listening, I kept thinking to myself “This voice sounds familiar to me. Why does it sound familiar?” From there, I noticed that the voice sounded like it belonged to an older woman, and then I remembered that there was cheerleading equipment in the Clue Package, which made me think of the show Cheers, and then I realized that the reason why her voice sounded familiar was because I had seen her a few years prior at a taping of an episode of Match Game, so from there, I figured out that Baby Mammoth was Kirstie Alley.
The next contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was The Beetle from Season 8. This is actually an interesting case, so bear with me on this one. In the past, before each season started, the show would release a massive list of accolades among all the contestants that season, and one of the accolades they released was that one of the contestants was a former mayor. I don’t know about all of you reading, but I don’t feel that most mayors are famous, so I quickly decided to see if there were any celebrities who had been mayors in the past, and what I found didn’t just help me out, it gave me the answer of who was on the show. There was one celebrity I found on this relatively short list who had already been on many other game shows already by that point in time, and that celebrity was none other than former mayor of Cincinnati Jerry Springer. Yes, that’s right. Daytime TV legend Jerry Springer was once a politician. So, I didn’t exactly figure out who he was on the show, but I knew he was a contestant before the season even started.
The next contestant that I was able to guess correctly with no help was The Mummies from Season 8. As soon as I saw them singing the theme song to The Monkees in a trailer, I knew that they were going to be contestants who were there to have fun, and as soon as they released some early clues, which were The Fox, who was Wayne Brady, and a bunch of grapes, I knew that they were Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, and Mike Lookinland from The Brady Bunch.
The next contestant that I was able to guess correctly with no help was The Walrus from Season 8. This one is interesting to me, as this is one that I guessed with vibes. The theme nights in Season 8 had contestants that were connected to the theme of the episode, so I felt that there would be no exception for 90s Night, and when I saw that he didn’t look super tall, my early guess was Joey Lawrence. When I saw that an early clue for him was a flower, I was even more convinced that it was him, as he starred in the show Blossom, and then when the episode finally aired, I saw that it was in fact, Joey Lawrence.
The next contestant that I was sort of able to guess correctly with no help was The Avocado. The reason why I say sort of is because I recognized his voice in his Clue Package, but not during any of his performances, as even distorted, I was somehow able to sort of recognize the voice of Adam Carolla.
The next contestant that I was able to guess correctly with no help was The Diver from Season 10. Yes, I was unable to correctly guess anyone without help in Season 9, don’t make fun of me.
With that rant out of the way, let’s talk about Diver.
We were given the first clues for him on a Sneak Peek Episode, and he described himself as the most hated creature in the ocean, and then there was a cardinal. As it was 2023 at the time, the first thing that occurred was to search where Tom Sandoval was born, so I did, and found that he was born in St. Louis, which told me that he was The Diver, and when he made his debut, I found that I was right.
The next contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was Afghan Hound from Season 11. Yes, that’s right. I only guessed one celebrity in Season 10 with no help. My knowledge of celebrities is very limited and also very accurate in the most bizarre places.
So, with all that out of the way, let’s talk about Afghan Hound.
Before she made her debut, a clip was released to the internet of Jenny guessing that she was Brooke Hogan, and what she said told me that it was a reality star who was also from a famous Reality TV family. When it came time for her actual Clue Package during her debut, there was one thing she said that immediately made me realize who it was. She talked about how she and her family became famous, and then she said “Best of all, we were together. Until recently.” As soon as she said that, I knew exactly who it was, as there is a reality star whose parents were in prison at the time, and that is Savannah Chrisley. I was surprised that none of the panelists said her name, because I figured it out before she even started performing.
The next contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was The Koala from Season 11. This one was due to some help from a very revealing trailer, as it showed that he had a great singing voice, and then it showed the panelists guessing former football players. From there, I looked up football players who can sing, and one that I found was named DeMarcus Ware, who had performed the National Anthem shortly before the show was taped, and his voice sounded very similar to the one I heard in the trailer, so that was what I chose go with as an early guess. Much to my surprise, I found that I was correct, as The Koala was revealed to be DeMarcus Ware.
The next contestant, or should I say contestants, that I was able to correctly guess with no help was The Beets from Season 11. This one was very impressive for me, as I figured out who it was halfway through their first performance. I was listening to their voices, when I was suddenly able to put faces to the voices I was hearing with the clues I had just heard. The Clue Package implied that the two of them were friends who had competed against each other, and the world had literally pitted them against each other. So remembering that, hearing their amazing voices, and knowing that the two had just gone on tour together, I had figured out that The Beets were none other than Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard.
The next contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was The Showbird from Season 11. I actually had a good idea as to who she was with her Clue Package, and hearing her sing confirmed it for me. For this season, the contestants all had Masked Ambassadors, which served as clues for them, and her ambassador was Joel McHale, and one of the clues she gave during her Clue Package was that she appeared in some of the biggest blockbusters of all time. I knew for a fact that this person starred in Community with Joel McHale and appeared in Avengers: Endgame, which led me to the correct guess of Yvette Nicole Brown.
The next contestant that I was able to correctly guess with no help was Honeypot from Season 13. Yes, I was only able to guess one contestant in Season 12 with no help, don’t make fun of me.
Now that I’ve gotten that snarkiness out of the way, on to Honeypot.
Before his introduction, I had been led to believe that he was a comedian who wasn’t super tall. His Clue Package was stylized as a game show, and one of the clues was him using scissors to cut a wig. All these clues, combined with the fact that he had the voice of an older man and was singing SexyBack by Justin Timberlake, led me to the correct guess of Cedric The Entertainer.
The next two contestants that I was able to guess correctly with no help were Bat and Yorkie from Season 13. There is a reason why I am saying both of them, and I will get to it. In this season, some of the contestants were photographed in public at locations that served as clues. Both Bat and Yorkie were photographed at locations that are associated with Lisa Vanderpump. This made me think that one of them was from Vanderpump Rules, and one of them was from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I figured that the person from Vanderpump Rules was either Ariana Madix, Scheana Shay, or Lala Kent, and while there were many Real Housewives it could have been, I knew that if it was a singer, it was going to be Erika Jayne. Once they made their debuts, Bat was revealed to be Scheana Shay and Yorkie was revealed to be Erika Jayne, so I was on the right track and I was correct with both of them.
The next contestant that I was able to guess correctly with no help was Paparazzo from Season 13. Almost every costume on this season featured little clues on them that were a hint to the celebrity underneath. What I mean by this is that they were certain costumes that had details on them that were completely out of place, such as a “W” on the Stud Muffin costume, which does not have that letter anywhere in its name, but was because Method Man, the celebrity underneath, is part of Wu Tang Clan. In a clip of the panelists making guesses as to who they thought Paparazzo was, some person on the internet pointed out that he had socks that had globes on them. I zoomed in on an image of the costume, and I saw that there were globes on his socks, which made me think of the show Boy Meets World, and this was even before I found out that the show actually had a globe in its logo. In that same clip that was released early, Paparazzo said that one of his costars was Steve Martin, and in doing some research, I found that one of the stars of Boy Meets World had starred with Steve Martin in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, so as a result, my early guess for Paparazzo, that ended up being correct, was none other than Matthew Lawrence.
The next contestant that I was able to guess correctly with no help was The Griffin from Season 13. Some online publication had written a half-remembered writeup of the episode where Griffin made his debut, and what they had said was enough to convince me at the time that it was David Arquette. As we got closer to his debut, however, I found out some more information that made me doubt that it was him, which was his song choice, as I just couldn’t see David Arquette singing Rewrite The Stars from The Greatest Showman. Around this time, I found myself coming up with other guesses that I was sure were wrong, and one that I thought made sense with what I saw from the writeup, which I will get to, but this guess was also easily disproved by the supposed clue that the contestant had lost his dad, and this celebrity’s dad is still alive. When it was time for Griffin to make his debut, a clip of the panelists making their guesses for him was released, and when I found out what some of the clues actually were, I found myself feeling more confident in this uncertain guess, and when the episode actually aired, my uncertain guess was confirmed, as Griffin was none other than James Van Der Beek.
The next contestant that I was sort of able to guess correctly with no help was Mad Scientist Monster from Season 13. Okay, before I get into explaining how I figured it out, I’m going to need to share with you all a very funny story. This costume was introduced in a special video, where he said that creativity was in his DNA, and there were two clues on his costume, which were a name tag with two bees on it, and a pen with an orange on it. From there, my early guess for him was Andy Grammer, as his dad is also a singer, the bees would be referring to his song Honey I’m Good, and he is from Orange County in New York. I was wrong, but not in the way you would expect, as weeks before we would meet Mad Scientist Monster, we met Boogie Woogie, who was Andy Grammer. Yes, that’s right. I incorrectly guessed Andy Grammer for one contestant using what was in front of me, and he ended up being on the show anyway in another costume. I don’t think I could do that again even if I tried.
So, after that happened, I had to think of another early guess using the information that I had. While I had thought of a few names, one that occurred to me was either of the two members of Florida Georgia Line, as the oranges were because of Orange County in Florida, and the name tag with the two bees would be referring to their song Meant To Be with Bebe Rexha, but I was unsure if the name tag would be referring to something as generic as that, and yes, I am saying that knowing full well that I originally thought it was referring to one of Andy Grammer’s songs.
A few weeks later, I found out that this theory was correct, as it turned out that Mad Scientist Monster was Brian Kelley, one of the two members of Florida Georgia Line.
And the final contestant that I was able to guess correctly with no help is the most impressive out of all of them, as I know very little about this celebrity, and by just focusing on the story that was told in the Clue Package, I figured out who it was.
The contestant was The Ant, who told a story about how she had to bear a deep, dark secret for her entire career, and because of that secret, powerful people tried to erase her, brush her off, and stomp her out, and the weight of it broke her spirit and her, but she recently made a decision, which was that she could either stay broken, or she could be a warrior, and the reason she was on the show was to fight for her voice, to be heard, and to march toward real change.
Somehow, my brain put together that the story was talking about Diddy, and then I was able to correctly figure out that Ant was Aubrey O’Day from Danity Kane.
I knew absolutely nothing about her, and I still don’t know that much, the main reason I had any sort of familiarity with her was because I had recently written about how she would be great for the show, and apparently just talking about her accolades and the shows she has been part of was enough for me to know her story. And I am still impressed that I managed to correctly guess someone that I am not that familiar with.
Overall, I have had an interesting history with figuring out which celebrities were on the show by myself! I hope you all enjoyed reading this blog post, and I’ll see you all soon with another one!
