The Semifinals
After an amazing episode last week with The Quarterfinals in Soundtrack Of My Life Night last week, it was time for The Semifinals! I was looking forward to this episode very much, as we were at the final four with four amazing singers, and I knew that we would be getting four amazing performances. When the trailer for this episode dropped, I saw that there was going to be a twist that had never happened in the show before, so I had an early guess as to what was going to happen, and by the time the episode ended, I found that I was right in what I thought was going to happen.
The episode opened with a group performance of “HandClap” by Fitz and the Tantrums. As I have said many times before, I always enjoy group performances, as they give the contestants a chance to stand out together, and they always pick the best songs for it.
As there were four contestants left, they would each be performing in two face offs, with the two winners of each face off going straight to the finale, and the other two going head to head in a smackdown to determine the third contestant in the finale.
The first two contestants to face off were Boogie Woogie and Pearl. Clue packages for this episode were presented by way of the contestants talking about themselves and trash talking the contestant they were up against. Pearl started off by saying that she is no stranger to fighting for survival, and that during her time on the show, she has shown that she can do any and all genres. She then said that one thing about her is that she is not afraid to blaze a trail, as when she first broke onto the scene, there weren’t many women doing what she was doing, so she thought “Why not,” and she started her own movement and ended up opening doors for so many others. Boogie Woogie then said that he is usually a happy-go-lucky guy, but the farther he has gotten in the competition, the more serious he has been becoming, as he is tapping into emotions that have been asleep for way too long.
Boogie Woogie then went on to give an amazing performance of “Maps” by Maroon 5, during which he showed off all the power in his voice as well as his fun personality. As an additional clue at the end of each performance, each contestant said which of the panelists they had a connection to. Boogie Woogie said that he was connected to Ken, as Ken was one of his millions of followers, and then he promised that when the show was over, he would follow him back. I still agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Boogie Woogie is Andy Grammer.
After that, Pearl went on to give an amazing performance of “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore, during which she showed off all the power and control in her voice, especially during the chorus. After the performance, the panelist she said she was connected to was Jenny, and she said that not only did they walk the same carpet, but she watched her win one of her biggest awards at the AMAs. I still agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Pearl is country singer Gretchen Wilson, as she has won two American Music Awards.
After that, it was time for the panel and the audience to vote on who won the face off, and the singer with the most votes was revealed to be Pearl, which did not surprise me, as I knew that it was going to be very close.
After that, it was time for the second face off of the night with Coral and Mad Scientist Monster. Coral started off by saying that she was pumped for the battle, as not only was she the youngest left in the competition, she was also one of the youngest to make it that far. Mad Scientist Monster then said that he had been training for this his whole life, as since he is an athlete turned singer, he applies a sports mentality to all his performances. He then said that he wasn’t just cruising, and that he was working hard, doing cardio, and keeping his strength up.
Coral then went on to give an amazing performance of “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish, during which she showed off all the power and emotion in her voice. After the performance, the panelist that she had a connection to was revealed to be Rita, and Coral then said that Rita’s franchise and her franchise are going to make beautiful sweet music later this year. As the panelists were making their guesses, Rita threw out three names, and one of them was the correct guess of actress and singer Meg Donnelly. She is the youngest person there right now and to make it to this point in the show’s history, as she was born in 2000, and she is part of the “Zombies” franchise, which is going on tour this year with the “Descendants” franchise, which Rita starred in.
After that, Mad Scientist Monster went on to give an amazing performance of “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, which was perfect for his voice as he is a country singer, and was also the perfect song to get the audience to have a great time. After the performance, the panelist that he had a connection to was revealed to be Robin, and Mad Scientist Monster then said that the Lucky Duck clue about someone stealing something from him was him back in 2013. I still agree with the popular guess on the internet, which is that Mad Scientist Monster is Brian Kelley from Florida Georgia Line, as he was going to be a baseball player before becoming a country singer.
After that, it was time for the audience and the panel to vote on who they thought won the face off. Me, my parents, my uncle, and his partner were all convinced that Coral had won the face off, but much to our surprise, Mad Scientist Monster was announced as the winner of the face off. This meant that Boogie Woogie and Coral, two great singers, were about to go head to head in a Smackdown.
After that, it was time for the Smackdown between Coral and Boogie Woogie, at which point one would move on to the finale, while the other one would be unmasked. Coral went first and performed “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall, during which she showed off all the power in her voice. Boogie Woogie then performed “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” by Jet, during which he also showed off all the power in his voice.
It was then time for the panelists to vote on who won the Smackdown, but before that could happen, Detective Lucky Duck came out with the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell. He then said that both Coral and Boogie Woogie were safe and heading to the finale, and then said that he would be unmasking at that moment. He then gave a clue package, where he said that he is used to working on massive movie sets, and that there wasn’t an Oscar he didn’t know, while visual clues included a sign saying “Superheroes Only” and a set of fangs, which made me even more confident as to who he was. After that, he said that he wouldn’t let the panelists make guesses, as with how they had been guessing throughout the season, they would get it wrong. Detective Lucky Duck then unmasked, and the internet was proven to be right yet again, as he was revealed to be Oscar winning director and husband of Rita Ora Taika Waititi. I found it incredibly funny that Rita’s response to seeing him unmasked was to tell him that she hated him, and then saying that she thought he was the most annoying thing on the whole show literally seconds before she hugged and kissed him. I also found it funny that she said that he had always talked about wanting to be a pop star, and he said that this was as close as he was getting, and also telling America in the most unenthusiastic voice imaginable that he is now a pop star, and that he did the show because he doesn’t see Rita anymore, and that he was able to trick Rita because she is always there.
Overall, this was another amazing episode of Season 13 of The Masked Singer, and I’ll see you all next week for the four person Season Finale!
